Delivering clothing to the Mennonite Centre at Halbstadt (the Centre was previously the High School attended by Tina Klassen Fransen (1907 - 1970), of Fuerstenau, Molotschna).
The commemorative towel was a unique gift given to me at the Fransen Treffen in Rehe by a second cousin of mine. It seems to me she had several made for her female first cousins and I was included. How special!
In August 1978, I visited this building with my father Nicholas Fransen, his 2nd wife, Tina Martens Fransen, and my siblings Herta and Werner. The building was still in use as a school, and the cleaning woman let us in. Werner took a picture of the rest of us sitting in a classroom with desks. When we were there on July 10, 2009, I showed the picture to Dema, the Ukrainian staff person, and he asked to make a copy of the picture for his records. If I knew how, I would post that picture into this blog. The school building has been renovated by the Friends of the Mennonite Centre in Ukraine, a charitable organization that will maintain it as a historical building in Molochansk (formerly Halbstadt) as a vehicle of humanitarian services which are community-based, provided without discrimination, foster local initiative, and are sustainable, while interpreting and commemorating the Mennonite past. My mother would be pleased! Edith Fransen
A family blog inspired by a trip to Ukraine (6-13 July 2009), where roots were explored, connections established and memories shared. While the Ukraine trip inspired this blog, we hope that all Fransens will add to it - to share our ongoing stories.
